It happened to one of our good friends and benefactors!

It all seems so long ago....when I had been having a strange experience at night with one leg feeling noticeably a tingly, crawly, annoying sensation in my lower leg.  It almost demanded that I move my foot and when I did, the weird sensation went away for a second. Then it came right back!!!  And that intrusion was slow to start. It happened once or twice a month. As time went by, it increased in intensity and started happening more often. It lasted for about two hours each evening as I watched TV or sometimes at night when I settled into bed.  Either way it made it impossible for me to relax or sleep. Errrrrrr!  Being robbed of sleep made me irritable and frustrated because I didn't know why it was happening.

When I finally googled "leg twitching at night", Restless Legs Syndrome was what I was experiencing .....a sensory disorder. Now I had a name for what had been bugging me for 3 years. I also found out that there are two kinds of restless legs. One of them occurs with the strange sensation below the knee but the leg itself does not move. It is called RLS. The other one is called periodic limb movement of sleep (PLMS).  PLMS is characterized by involuntary leg (and sometimes arm) twitching or jerking movements during sleep that typically occur every 15 to 40 seconds, sometimes throughout the night.  Although many individuals with RLS also develop PLMS, most people with PLMS do not experience RLS.

One evening, I was so uncomfortable and distraught, my husband suggested that he put  a small weighted blanket on my leg. Ironically, we had just finished making a toddler blanket. Dave put a sheet on my leg first and then he put the little blanket on it. I didn't give it much thought and just continued watching TV.  It didn't take very long before I STARTED FEELING RELIEF.  I really could not believe it!!! It was like magic.

After 4-5 evenings of doing this, I hesitated to believe that the symptoms were really gone.

And yet, here I am , years later, and no longer suffering from the discomfort and frustration of RLS.....and now with that experience behind me, we designed mini weighted blankets for others who are suffering with RLS like I used to and I feel pretty good about that.
